Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8)

Renters with Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) pay about 30% of their income for the rent.

Local housing authorities provide Housing Choice Vouchers to renters with low incomes. Each housing authority manages their own wait list.

Wait lists for Housing Choice Vouchers are often closed, and have long wait times.  It is common to wait 2-5+ years on a list.

Renters can use the voucher anywhere that a rental property will accept it. In most areas rental properties are not required to accept Housing Choice Vouchers.

With Housing Choice Vouchers, the subsidy stays with the renter. If the renter moves, the subsidy travels with them.
